LODGING

Explore South Georgia Aboard the Pelagic 77 ‘Amundsen’

The Ultimate Expedition Yacht for High-Latitude Exploration

When it comes to truly experiencing the raw wilderness of South Georgia — its remote fjords, towering peaks, and abundant wildlife — the vessel you travel on makes all the difference. Most ships are too large or limited to access the coastline’s most dramatic and untouched regions. That’s why we’re setting sail aboard a vessel unlike any other: the Pelagic 77 Amundsen — one of the world’s most advanced expedition yachts, purpose-built for polar exploration.

Designed for Exploration, Not Tourism

The Amundsen isn’t a cruise ship. It’s a state-of-the-art sailing vessel created by Tony Castro, Skip Novak, and Nicolás Ibáñez — visionaries in polar navigation. Skip Novak has led over 30 expeditions in the high latitudes and built Amundsen with one goal: to access remote regions safely, sustainably, and comfortably, while giving small groups the opportunity to truly engage with the wild.

Every design detail serves a purpose — from its manual sail systems and twin carbon masts that allow safe, reliable operation in extreme conditions, to its aluminum hull and fixed keel that ensure unmatched stability in the Southern Ocean.

Key Expedition Features

  • Expedition-Ready Design

    • Aluminum Hull & Fixed Keel — Engineered for stability in Antarctic seas

    • Manual Sailing Systems — Safe, hands-on operation without the risks of automation

    • Twin Carbon Masts & Redundant Sails — Optimized for reliability in remote environments

    • Eco-Friendly Volvo Engines — Low-emission propulsion, minimizing environmental impact

    • Advanced Navigation & Safety Systems — Designed for safety and autonomy in the field

  • Comfort & Functionality Onboard

    • Spacious Shared Cabins — Warm, restful accommodations designed for real expeditions

    • Heated Pilothouse Lounge — Full 360° observation in comfort, no matter the weather

    • Expedition Library & Workspace — Space to review photography, share stories, or study wildlife

    • Chef-Prepared Meals — Nutritious, fresh meals served family-style in the onboard saloon

    • Ample Gear Storage — Purpose-built for photography and exploration equipment

    • Multiple Landing Boats — Two inflatables for increased access and flexibility

Unlike larger vessels, Amundsen can anchor in tight, sheltered coves, getting you closer to wildlife and landscapes that few travelers ever reach. Onboard, comfort and function go hand-in-hand — from the heated, bamboo-lined interior to the pilot house with panoramic views, every space is designed for both rest and exploration.

This is not luxury in the conventional sense. It is expedition luxury — the comfort of self-sufficiency, the warmth of well-designed spaces, and the rare ability to explore one of Earth’s most remote regions in safety and depth.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Wildlife Like Nowhere Else

A South Georgia wildlife expedition is unlike any other journey on Earth. The island’s remote location and strict conservation protections ensure that the massive colonies of penguins, seals, and seabirds remain largely undisturbed. Expect close encounters with:

  • Hundreds of thousands of king penguins at St. Andrews Bay and Salisbury Plain
  • Giant elephant seals battling for territory on the beaches
  • Wandering albatrosses nesting on Prion Island
  • Humpback whales and orcas patrolling the surrounding waters
  • Fur seals blanketing the coastline in astonishing numbers

Every day brings new photographic and wildlife-viewing opportunities, with expert guidance from Amos Nachoum to help you get the perfect shot.

Small-Group Advantage: Exclusive Access to South Georgia

Unlike large cruise ships that restrict landing time, our small-group format (8 guests max) ensures intimate, unrestricted access to South Georgia’s most remote locations. This means:

  • More time on shore with wildlife
  • Personalized photography guidance from Amos
  • Greater flexibility to adapt to weather and wildlife movements

This is a true expedition, designed for those who want to explore, experience, and photograph South Georgia without limitations.

Land, Ice, and History: A Photographer’s Dream

South Georgia’s dramatic landscapes provide an unparalleled setting for wildlife photography and exploration. From towering glacial peaks to ice-filled fjords, the scenery is as breathtaking as the wildlife.

As part of this South Georgia wildlife expedition, we’ll also visit historical sites linked to Sir Ernest Shackleton, including:

  • Grytviken Whaling Station – A haunting reminder of South Georgia’s past
  • Shackleton’s Grave – Pay tribute to the legendary explorer
  • Stromness & Fortuna Bay – Follow parts of Shackleton’s heroic 1916 journey

These historic locations, combined with the stunning polar scenery, make South Georgia a bucket-list destination for photographers, adventurers, and history enthusiasts alike.

*FINAL PAYMENT, CANCELLATION AND TRIP CHANGE POLICY

We at Big Animals LLC know how upsetting it might be for our valued clients to have to postpone or cancel a trip they have been looking forward to for months. We, too, are disappointed when plans must be changed. However, we make extensive preparations in advance of each trip and we are required to make nonrefundable payments to hotels and other vendors on a regular basis. Consequently, we must rigorously enforce our cancellation and trip change policy for all guests without exception. Purchasing travel insurance is vital and may be obtained through a variety of insurance providers. Life in the modern world has taught us that trip cancellations and interruptions happen, luggage gets lost, and people have accidents prior to trips, and people get sick, and are unable to commence or complete anticipated journeys. Insurance is expected to provide you, as our valued client, with the protection and peace of mind in the event that all things do not go according to your intended plan. As a traveler, please be aware you are personally responsible for any expenses incurred due to illness or injury that may arise before departure or while you are on expedition — and as per the details below — cancelling or altering a trip without insurance becomes very expensive for all parties involved, including for Big Animals LLC. We encourage you to make the responsible choice — protect your investment with a reasonably-priced, comprehensive insurance policy. Big Animals LLC requires a deposit equal to 33% of the total trip price at the time of booking, including all applicable taxes, in order to secure space. Once we have accepted your deposit and application, we will make non-refundable payments to secure your space with overseas vendors; consequently, all deposits on expeditions are also non-refundable, without exception.
  • Full payment is due 90 days (12:00am US Pacific Time) before the expeditions’ departure date.
  • In the event of cancellations made by customers fewer than 120 calendar days (12:00am US Pacific Time) before the expeditions’ start date, then Big Animals LLC shall charge a fee equal to 50% of the expedition’s full price, plus a $500 administration fee, and will offer the discounted trip to another traveler at a discounted rate.  If no replacement traveler can be located then the full amount previously paid by the original trip purchaser to Big Animals LLC shall be non-refundable.  Please purchase travel insurance and plan accordingly.
There shall be no exceptions to this “FINAL PAYMENT, CANCELLATION AND TRIP CHANGE POLICY” for any reason, including, but not limited to force majeure. Governing Law California. The validity, interpretation, construction and performance of this Agreement, and all acts and transactions pursuant hereto and the rights and obligations of the parties hereto shall be governed, construed and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the state of California, without giving effect to principles of conflicts of law.
