EXPEDITION DETAILS

LOCATION DETAILS

After feeding in the Sea of Cortez during the spring months, the blue whales begin their migration to Southern California in midsummer mer. With a diving vessel, a scouting plane, and several reporting posts – we will launch from San Diego to travel right in the path of the blue whale’s journey while escorted and directed by a scouting plane above. Simultaneously, makko sharks are following the tuna north from Baja, Mexico into San Diego, where they join with the blue sharks to patrol deep-water structures in search of food.

WHALES

To locate the elusive blue whales, we have observing posts along the Baja peninsula, and we deploy a scouting plane days prior to our trip and as well as during our search for the big animals. We put on board only two guests, and two 2-seater kayaks + two professional kayakers. With the information from the plane, we are able to meet the blue whales in Mexican waters by Coronado island. Then, for environmental reasons, we shut down our boat and launch the quieter kayaks to stealthily approach the whales from a distance. You sit up front with mask, fins, snorkel, and camera in hand while the professional kayakers pull you in close enough for the encounter of a lifetime.

SHARKS

For the mako and blue sharks, we motor 15 miles offshore to the deep underwater canyon off Del Mar. Once the chum is set up, it’s a waiting game! In a few hours the sharks show up, and you slip in quietly to experience these sleek, open-ocean sharks in an uninhibited, cage-free encounter.

2015 ITINERARY

Day 1: ARRIVE: San Diego.  Check in to the hotel of your choice. The rest of the day will be spent preparing cameras, discussing logistics and strategy.  We meet in the evening for a briefing and dinner.

Day 2-5: We operate out of Mission Bay. For the next five days,a spotter plane will leave early in the morning, weather permitting. (The marine layer is sometimes too low to fly and scout for whales. In this case, the pilot will wait until the layer rises high enough to fly safely.) The pilot searches for Blue Whales for 3 to 4 hours in an area 15 to 25 miles offshore between San Diego and Mexico. While waiting for the scouting report, if we come across an encounter with other marine life along the way, we will free dive in the lovely blue Pacific. What makes this expedition so unique is that, in addition to having a scout plane with us everyday, we also employ two master kayakers to paddle us as quietly as possible to the shy blue whale.  The guest seat is at the front of the kayak, where you’ll have mask, fins and camera ready to go at any time. The kayaker sits in the back to paddle you as fast as humanly possible to the approximate location of the incoming Blues. In the event we have good contact with the whales we will stay out until evening. This is in order to be close to the action, to increase our knowledge of whale behavior, and to maximize opportunities for quality photography encounters above and below water with the shy Blue Whales. At the end of the day, we return to shore.

Day 6: Departing at 5am by boat, we will travel 15 miles offshore to the Del Mar canyon, where we will set up our shark attractant and drift in wait of the blue and mako shark.  Once the sharks arrive, we slip quietly into the water and swim at the surface with these sharks, cage-free.
