Shark Cage Diving
Cage diving with great white sharks is better than a roller coaster and a 3D movie combined. Imagine being surrounded by 360 degrees of blue water… then you see a large shadow approaching from the distance…getting bigger, and closer to you. Even though you are protected by a steel cage, you can hear your heart pounding like never before.
The massive shark approaches just under the surface of the water, its large dorsal fin slices the water above, leaving a spray of water behind. You become mesmerized by its psychedelic markings and the sunlight reflecting over the shark’s metallic skin. Soon, the animal is so close you can look it in the eye.
If you’ve ever dreamed of being in the water with one of the world’s greatest predators, our expedition is a unique opportunity to do just that. We limit our trip to only ten guests, which means you to stay with the sharks from morning to night. With no limiting factor but your sense of adventure and patience waiting for the shark visit your orbit.
The clear waters of Guadalupe Island offer visibility from 60 up to 100 feet / 20 – 30 meters. Environmentally isolated and surrounded by deep water, this is one of the best locations to meet, photograph and film great white sharks. Researchers have identified and named more than 170 great whites based on the body markings exclusive to each animal.
There are those who are content to see an amazing adventure on TV, and there are those who are ready to live it. Which one are you?
We’ve timed our expedition for the peak season in November. This is when we could see 14 to 17 large females in the area. They come at this time to feed on the elephant seal. If you do this adventure only once in your lifetime, we think you should experience it at the most exciting and rewarding time. After all, your time away from home and business is most valuable.

Is this trip right for me?
This shark diving experience is open to a maximum of ten guests, non-divers and certified divers are welcome. With only ten people onboard and two cages, you can have as much time as you like in the clear water. Cages are attached to the diving platform, and air is supplied from the surface through a hookah line.
Imagine being lowered in the cage with three other divers, 20 feet below the surface. The cage is suspended mid-water and sunlight pierces through the blue. The underwater landscape is reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. You stare out into the blue water, anticipating the shark’s arrival. It could be anytime and without warning, great whites move quietly and make no announcement. Before long, your buddy will nudge you, excited like a kid, pointing out a shark approaching. Slowly, a curious shark cruises by the cage. The shark looks like it might want to ask, “What are you doing here?”
After hours in the cage, wet and cold but excited, you enjoy a hot shower back on the liveaboard. After enjoying a meal, you settle into the comfortable salon for the nightly photography show and conservation presentation. Imagine four days like this: full of shark action during the day, and evening relaxation with a drink and colorful sunset over the remote island of Guadalupe.
Expedition guide Amos Nachoum is a two-time winner of BBC’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year and an experienced shark photographer. Guests will benefit from his knowledge and expertise to capture high-quality images using both strobes and ambient-light.
Isla Guadalupe is an overnight 180-mile / 241-kilometer boat journey from Ensenada, Mexico. When you awake you’ll see fur seals perched on large boulders and elephant seals slumbering on rocky beaches.
More than 170 different great whites have been seen here over the years. Guadalupe’s dramatic landscape is sometimes compared to the Grand Canyon – both topside and underwater.
Our expedition takes place in November, the most epic time to visit based on our 12+ years visiting this island. This is the peak time to see the bigger, female great whites – up to 16 or 17 on average. For many of you, this is a once in a lifetime adventure, and we think it’s important the experience should be as amazing as possible!
Sharkwater is a 134″ vessel owned by US based NGO Fins Attached. Participation in the trip helps support the education effort to save sharks. The vessel is outfitted with five double ensuite cabins with private head and shower. There is a large living room housing a full entertainment system and computer. The boat is fully air conditioned, has a water purification system, plus a Nitrox blending system. The vessel can accommodate 10 passengers, in luxury. We make sure everyone gets a unique, personalized experience with as much time in the water as they can handle.
Sharkwater has the capacity to carry two shark cages, allowing our 10 guests maximum amount of time in the water. An automatic hoist raises and lowers the cages, one at water level and a second one to 30 feet deep. An added bonus, we have on board a two-person submarine, capable for 1,000 dive, for 3 to 4 hours at extra cost of $2,000 per person. With the sub, we will be able to study and photograph the behavior shark in deep water.
Amos has 30 years experience diving with Great White Sharks off Long Island New York, Australia, South Africa, and off the Farallon Islands, San Francisco.
Amos is also a very accomplished professional photographer who was the BBC wildlife photographer of the year in 2007 and 2008.
Throughout your trip Amos will be available to provide you with expert coaching on various aspects of photographing the sharks and their environment, with special attention paid to how to get the best performance from your equipment using both strobes and ambient-light photography.
