The Everest of Diving Adventures: Cageless Diving with the Great White Shark
ON THIS EXPEDITION, underwater photographers and thrill seekers alike will get close to the ultimate apex predator in its natural environment. This is also one of the rare Big Animals expeditions that suits both divers and non-divers.
Amos will lead two departures: one for five days of diving, and the second four for days of diving. A maximum of ten guests for each departure will sail on the 18-passenger 110′ long MV Sea Escape. We carry three large cages including one designed to lower to 20 meters for a thrilling view from below. We lightly chum the water to get the attention of the sharks and, with only ten guests, everyone can be in the cages at the same time. You really need to be in the water to fully appreciate these rare, impressive animals, from young ones at 3 meters long to the more mature at over 5 meters.
There are only three places in the world where you can encounter great white sharks — Africa, Australia, and Mexico. From August to December, the great whites visit Isla Guadalupe, a volcanic island located 241 kilometers off the west coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, and some 400 kilometers southwest of the city of Ensenada. At least 100 great whites will come to a particular bay on this island in search of elephant seals and large schools of tuna, and we offer virtually unlimited diving with them. The sea conditions are generally calm, with 25- to 40-meter visibility in deep blue water and a water temperature of 21-22 degrees C.
General Itinerary
Day 1: ARRIVE San Diego and stay overnight at a hotel of your choice near the airport. We meet for dinner and briefing.
Day 2: By 8AM, we head for Ensenada. This is usually a 90-minute ride, depending on border-crossing formalities and traffic. As soon as we reach the port in Ensenada, we board our vessel. We leave at midday for our 18-hour crossing to Isla Guadalupe.
Days 3 – 7: ARRIVE Guadalupe around 10AM and as soon as the three cages are in the water, divers are invited to join the action. During our five days on site, the dive deck is open for action and excitement from 8AM to 5PM.
DEPART Guadalupe by 2PM on the last day of diving and start the 18-20 hour cruise back to Ensenada.
Day 8: ARRIVE Ensenada at midday and return across the border to your hotel in San Diego or to the airport if you have a connecting flight on that day. Start preparing your cocktail party anecdotes; the week you just spent off Baja California will provide you with years worth of material.
