Safe Passage

For the last 3 years we have had the privilege of taking people to experience these creatures first hand, and through a combination of respect and experience, we have had no problems interacting with them peacefully and safely. To do this we:

    • only dive in the winter months when the cooler water makes the crocs less active
    • dive in higher water, allowing more space to dive and clearer conditions
    • restrict the trip to expert divers and only have one guest in the water at a time
    • get to the bottom quickly – we don’t create a silhouette for the crocs to see
    • carefully follow the lead of the safety diver and guide
    • above all else, we respect the power and beauty of the crocodile

The Mysterious River King

For most of human history very little was known about crocodiles. People generally didn’t go in the water with them on purpose, and the crocs, for their part, never do much on land. When we did see them they were mostly sleeping in the sun or snatching prey. What they did underneath the river’s surface, how they really lived their lives, was largely unknown.

That started to change a few years ago when researchers figured out how to dive freely with them in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The protocols they established opened the door for us to enter their world and experience this magnificent animal up close and personal.

Adventure at the Water’s Edge

When the water is cold crocs like to sunbathe, so we will first see them on the surface. When they hear or see us arrive, they immediately dive for safety. We will follow. Being reptiles, the cold water makes them lethargic and slow, so it’s likely we will catch up with them. Taking only one guest at a time, we use the shadow of the boat for cover as we dive in after the crocs.

Once we get down out of the “kill zone,” which is the surface area where we make a silhouette against the sky, we will be safe. Although we still treat them with great respect, the crocs do not pose a big threat to people underwater because their eyesight is poor — they have a protective membrane that covers their eyes. Since their eyesight is limited they cannot see us getting close. Our local guide for this expedition will be Walter Bernardis from African Watersport.
